Canahua is the Cadillac of Grains
Canahua is considered the “Cadillac” of high powered grains. Because it is rare, large mills cannot acquire enough supply and have avoided selling it in their products. As a small mill, Camano Island Mills can provide this unique food.
Better than Quinoa
While it is rare and expensive, it is a cousin to quinoa with all the health benefits but without the bitter taste. Canahua has less fat than Quinoa, but with more protein, calcium and phosphorous. It packs ten times more iron than quinoa.
From the Andes
Originally from the Andes Mountains in Bolivia, the food is fairly new to the United States and it is expected to appeal to people who consume similar nutrient-dense grains and seeds.
While “Quinoa is a true wonder food,” says Daniel Fairbanks, Ph.D., a professor of plant and animal science at Brigham Young University. “Canahua has about twice the protein of regular cereal grains, fewer carbohydrates, and even a dose of healthy fats.” Plus, it’s considered a “complete” protein, which means that, like meat, eggs, and dairy, it packs all of the essential amino acids your body needs to build muscle. Canahua is therefor a cut above quinoa and truly a superfood.
